After you’ve collected your rental car, you will start your South Africa road trip with a short drive to Addo Elephant National Park. Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa covering woodlands, grasslands and coastal areas. With over 600 elephants in the park, the large elephant herds are an impressive sight. The park is also shared by lions, buffalo, black rhinos, leopards, spotted hyenas and hundreds of different bird species.

Day 2 – Addo Elephant National Park
Today you can either book a guided game drive or explore the park by rental car. A stop at the park’s rest house will give you a unique lookout point over the water hole, even at night when it is floodlit. You can also make your way to the underground hide to encounter the wildlife at the water hole up close!

Day 3 – Addo Elephant National Park to Tsitsikamma National Park (208 km)
Today’s drive takes you through the rural Eastern Cape to the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma National Park. The park forms part of the Garden Route. Tsitsikamma is a Khoi/Nama word meaning ‘place of abundant water’.

Day 4 – Tsitsikamma National Park
In Tsitsikamma National Park you can hike through scenic routes to discover the natural beauty of this area. A famous hike is the Otter Hiking Trail. Not a hiker? You can also rent a mountain bike to cycle your way through the mountainous landscape. Need something more adventurous? Adrenaline junkies can venture on a canopy tour or go bungee jumping from great heights.

Today you will travel the longest distance of your South Africa road trip. Driving along the beautiful Route 62 through the Little Karoo and the stunning Tradouwpass, you’ll reach the coastal area of the Overberg and arrive in Hermanus. Day 8 – Hermanus to Stellenbosch (116 km or 204 km)
Hermanus is the world’s best place to see whales along the coast between July and December, so take your time to spot a few here! On your way to Stellenbosch, you can choose between two equally beautiful routes: the coastal route around the Kogelberg Nature Reserve (116 km) or the inland route via Teewaterskloofdam and Franschhoek, the culinary capital of South Africa (204 km). Stellenbosch is in the middle of the Cape Winelands, one of the world’s best wine regions.

Day 9 – Stellenbosch to Cape Town (50 km)
Take the morning to explore the area. In addition to the vineyards, you can also visit the Cross River Escape Route. Here you will find various local initiatives, including an art centre, school, and farms where you can buy freshly picked berries. You could also take a walk through the Assegaaibosch Nature Park, a park with large plains and steep mountains. From Stellenbosch it is just a short drive to Cape Town.

From the lighthouse you have a beautiful view of False Bay. You can visit Boulders Beach, the home of the African penguin, and on the way back, you can take one of the most stunning coastal routes between Noordhoek and Hout Bay: Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Day 11 – Cape Town: optional township tour
Today you can go on a Township tour. During the visit, you will learn more about Ubuntu, a philosophy emphasizing the bond that connects all of humanity, and take a look at life in a slum area.
