14 day tour of Nicaragua:

Route: Managua – Matagalpa – Selva Negra – León – Laguna de Apoyo – Granada – Isla de Ometepe – San Juan del Sur – Managua

Day 1 – Arrival in Managua
Upon arrival you will be picked up at the Managua airport by your hotel, which is located in the centre of the city.

Day 2 – Managua to Matagalpa / Pinolillo & Mocca Tour (B, L)
Today you will learn about coffee and chocolate and the most traditional drink in the country. First, you will visit El Castillo del Cacao to witness how the chocolate is made. Later, you will visit a diverse farm with a coffee and cacao plantation. This is a day to share with the locals and their experience of being local farmers. You will enjoy a delicious home-made lunch with the local family and your own Pinolillo drink that you’ll have made yourself.

Day 3 – Cloud forest of Selva Negra (B)
Selva Negra is situated in a tropical cloud forest area just outside of Matagalpa city. It is an outstanding ecolodge and a sustainable diversified farm. Here you will be able to walk through the cloud forest where you will see exceptional flora, colourful birds and maybe even howler monkeys and sloths.

Day 4- Selva Negra to San Jacinto to León (B)
Today you are going to León city, one of the former capital cities of Nicaragua. Along the way, you will make a short stop in the San Jacinto boiling mud pools. Here you will have your first glance of what the volcanic activity in Nicaragua looks like.

Day 5 – León: Tour Cerro Negro / volcano sandboarding (B)
Today, you will visit one of the youngest volcanoes in the world, Cerro Negro. You will climb to the top to enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings and the crater. After taking some photos and enjoying the view, you will have two options: walk back down the steep slope to the bottom of the volcano or slide down on a sand board – both exhilarating adventures! In the afternoon, you will have time on your own to explore the rich colonial heritage of the city.

Day 6 – León to Apoyo Lagoon (B)
After your adventure in León, a transfer will take you to Apoyo Lagoon, a wonderful place to relax. This is a beautiful lagoon located inside of an ancient volcanic crater. It is a great place for swimming, playing and relaxing. Many water facilities are available for your family. You will stay at a hotel located inside the crater right on the waterside.

Day 7 – Colonial city of Granada (B)
Granada is the oldest colonial city in continental Latin America. Explore the city and be part of the cultural environment of the central park and many other sites. For instance, a visit to El Convento de San Francisco is very worthwhile. This is a former monastery where you can see an impressive collection of pre-Columbian sculptures and an exhibition about the history of Nicaragua. You may also want to go to La Casa de los Leones, a old stately mansion renovated in 1920. Finally, walk down the lively Calzada street to the Lake of Nicaragua.

Day 8 – Masaya Volcano and pottery workshop (B)
Today, you will go on an included tour to visit Masaya Volcano and its surroundings, the Masaya Handicraft Market and Los Pueblo Blancos, little picturesque villages where they specialize in making local pottery with pre-Columbian techniques. Here you can try your hand at making your own piece of art in a hands-on workshop at a local cooperative. For lunch, you will visit the town Catarinawhere you can enjoy a fantastic view of Granada and the Apoyo Lagoon from above. Afterwards, you can visit some handicrafts stores and workshops at San Juan de Oriente town. Finally, you will visit the Masaya Volcano to see the lava pool in its crater – an amazing experience for adults and kids alike.

Day 9- Lake Nicaragua and Ometepe Island (B)
From Granada, a private transfer will take you to the port of San Jorge. Here you will board a ferry to Moyogalpa, the largest settlement in Ometepe. Once ashore, another driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel. You’ll have a free afternoon to explore the area or relax by the swimming pool at your hotel

Day 10: Tour around the island (B)
Today you will go on an included tour around the Island. A tour guide will pick you up at your hotel to visit the most famous spots of Ometepe. Learn about its precolonial history and visit its museums, enjoy Charco Verde lagoon and discover the history of Chico Largo, then have a refreshing moment in the waters of El Ojo de Agua.

Day 11 – Ometepe- San Juan del Sur (B)
In the morning, you’ll be taken to the port of Moyogalpa. Then you will take the ferry back to San Jorge. From here, you will go further to Playa Hermosa, a beach near the picturesque fishing village of San Juan del Sur situated on a beautiful bay of the Pacific Ocean.

Day 12- Playa Hermosa (B)
Today you have time enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Playa Hermosa. This area is ideal for enjoying the beach, swimming, surfing or take a tour out into the ocean to see turtles, dolphins and even whales (depending on season). From July-November it is possible to do a night turtle tour to the natural reserve La Flor when sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Day 13 – San Juan del Sur to Managua (B)
Today you’ll travel back to Managua. Check in at your comfortable hotel with swimming pool on this last night of your trip in Nicaragua.

Day 14 – Departure from Nicaragua / Return home (B)
It’s time to pack your memories along with your bags and get ready to go back home. Depending on your flight schedule, you will spend some time at the hotel and be transferred to the Managua airport.
