14 day tour of Ecuador:
Route: Quito – Mindo – Isinlivi – Chugchilan – Baños – Guamote – Cuenca – Guayaquil
Day 1: Quito – Mindo
Upon arrival at the international airport in Quito, you get picked up by a local driver and brought to your hotel in Mindo. This town is located in the cloud forest and has a lot to offer in terms of observing animals and active sports in the nature. As soon as you arrive at your hotel, you can take a rest or explore the small town.
Day 2: Mindo
Today you have a free day to explore Mindo by yourself and do various activities, such as a waterfall hike or bird-watching. If you wish, you can add a visit to the butterfly farm or a chocolate factory tour to your itinerary.
Day 3: Mindo – Quito
With a public bus, you travel back to the capital today. Upon arrival in Quito, you take a short taxi ride to your hotel and either already explore the city a bit or just take a rest.
Day 4: Quito
Today you will meet our representative in the lobby of your hotel. He or she will explain all you need to know about your trip in Ecuador and give some additional insider tips. Afterwards you can start with your self-guided city tour on paper, which leads you to the most interesting places around the city.
Day 5: Quito – Isinlivi
Today you start your three day trekking programme in the Cotopaxi Province. A private driver guide will pick you up at your hotel in the morning and bring you to your first stop Isinlivi. On the way you visit the Cotopaxi volcano and undertake a short guided tour to the first refuge of Ecuador’s highest active volcano. Upon arrival at your hotel in Isinlivi, you can take a rest or explore the natural surroundings.
Day 6: Isinlivi – Chugchilan
Early in the morning, you begin your trekking tour from your hotel to Chugchilan. This tour takes about 5 hours and you will be accompanied by a local guide. You can store your hand luggage on a mule that comes along as well. Take a lot of water and sunblock with you. In the evening you will have a well-deserved rest at your hotel in Chugchilan.
Day 7: Chugchilan – Baños
Another adventurous day, though with less walking. On your way to Baños, your private driver guide will make a stop at the volcanic crater lagoon Quilotoa as well as the little town of Tigua. Quilotoa is a beautiful lagoon whose water changes its colour every day. In Tigua you can have lunch and enjoy the local paintings. You arrive in Baños in the late afternoon where you can enjoy the adventurous and laid-back vibe of this town.
Day 8: Baños
Today you have a free day in Baños. There are many things that you can do here, especially if you like adventurous sports: mountain biking, rafting, horse riding, canoeing, zip-lining and much more. It is also a great spot to go hiking with many different hiking routes that take you to beautiful lookout points in the area.
Day 9: Baños – Guamote
With another private transfer, you travel from Baños via the Chimborazo region to Guamote. Along the way you will have a guided tour to the first two refuges of the Chimborazo volcano, the highest but inactive volcano in Ecuador. You arrive to Guamote in the late afternoon.
Day 10: Guamote
Today is another active day. You will make a day tour to the stunning Ozogoche Lake where you will go hiking in the area. There are various lakes and, for some unknown reason, in the months of September and October many birds dive in the lakes and die. Some speculate tiredness from a long migration journey, while local belief is that it’s a sacred tribute site.
Day 11: Guamote – Cuenca
This time on a public bus, your journey continues to Cuenca. Arriving in Cuenca in the late afternoon, you can take a rest in your hotel room or explore the vibrant nightlife of this city on the streets in the historic centre.
Day 12: Cuenca
Today you have a free day in Cuenca. Optionally, you can book a city tour or a day tour to the nearby National Park El Cajas. If you decide to stay in Cuenca, we recommend to walk around town as many tourist attractions are for free and the old town is just beautiful (recognised as UNESCO in 1999).
Day 9: Cuenca – Gauyaquil
On your way from Cuenca to Guayaquil with a private transfer, you make a stop at a cacao farm. You will have a short guided tour at this farm to learn more about the process of chocolate making as well as local fruits. A tasting is of course included. After lunch, you continue to your last stop in Guayaquil.
Day 10: Guayaquil
It is time to say goodbye to this wonderful country and return home. Your hotel will provide you with a shuttle to the airport, from where you take your return flight home. If you have time beforehand, you can explore the coastal town of Guayaquil a bit more.
