16 day tour of Nicaragua:
Route: Managua – León – Estelí – Somoto Canyon – Selva Negra – Granada – Ometepe Island – Corn Island – Managua
Day 1 – Arrival in Managua
Upon arrival you will be picked up at the Managua airport and brought to your hotel.
Day 2- León (B)
Your adventure in Nicaragua is about to start – León city awaits you. Today is a day to take things easy and not to rush. After breakfast, a transfer will pick you up at your hotel and take you to León city. You will have free time to explore the churches, museums, cafes and parks. Take the chance to visit the León Cathedral, the biggest building of its kind in Central America.
Day 3 – Cerro Negro volcano (B)
Today you will visit the Cerro Negro volcano, one of the youngest volcanoes in the world. Climb to the top in just over an hour and enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding volcanoes and the crater of Cerro Negro. After taking some photos and enjoying the view, you will have two options: hike down to the bottom of the volcano or slide down on a board and be part of an unforgettable experience. In the afternoon you will have free time to walk around León city.
Day 4- Estelí (B)
It’s time to head north and visit the northern region of Nicaragua. Take the free morning to relax at your hotel and at noon a transfer will take you to Estelí. Depending on the day and time you arrive, you will be able to visit the tobacco factories and saddle workshops located in town. Otherwise, take the time to explore the city at your own relaxed pace. Tomorrow another adventure awaits you.
Day 5- Somoto Canyon (B, L)
Visit one of the favourite places in the north for travelers who like adventure. Wake up early and take the public bus to Somoto town. Once you are there, a local tour guide will be waiting for you to take you to the Somoto canyon. Get ready to hike and swim in one of the natural wonders of Nicaragua. After the tour, you’ll take the public bus back to Estelí.
Day 6 – Selva Negra (B)
Today you will be brought to Selva Negra, a tropical cloud forest just outside Matagalpa. You’ll stay in a unique ecolodge with a farm and a sustainable coffee plantation. You can go on scenic walks through the cloud forest where you will see exceptional flora, colourful birds and maybe even some howler monkeys.
Day 7 – The cloud forest (B)
Because of the altitude, the temperature in Selva Negra is very pleasant. It’s an oasis of lakes, orchids, birds, monkeys, rainforest and coffee. You will have the whole day to explore the place.
Day 8– Colonial architecture of Granada (B)
Today you will be heading to Granada, the oldest colonial city in continental Latin America. Upon arrival, you will have plenty of time to explore the city. You can do various optional activities here. A visit to El Convento de San Francisco is very worthwhile. In this former monastery you can see an impressive collection of pre-Columbian sculptures and an exhibition about the history of Nicaragua. You can also go to La Casa de los Leones, a old stately mansion renovated in 1920. It’s known for its exhibitions and concerts.
Day 9 – Culture, Pottery and Volcano (B)
Today you will go on a tour of the Masaya Volcano and its surroundings. A transfer will pick you up in Granada and will take you to visit the Masaya Handicraft Market and Los Pueblo Blancos, a collection of little villages with many things to see and do. For instance, you will visit Catarina town for lunch while enjoying a fantastic view of Granada City and the Apoyo Lagoon from above. Afterwards, you can visit some handicrafts stores and workshops at San Juan de Oriente town. Finally, you will climb the Masaya Volcano to be amazed by the lava pool in its crater – an amazing experience for adults and kids alike.
Day 10- Granada to Ometepe Island (B)
From Granada, a private transfer will take you to the port of San Jorge. Here you will board a ferry to Moyogalpa, the largest settlement in Ometepe. Once ashore, another driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel. You’ll have a free afternoon to explore the area or relax by the swimming pool at your hotel.
Day 11- Discovering Ometepe / Day off (B)
Ometepe has been considered a natural wonder by both visitors and scientists. Not only is it an important site of nature and volcanoes, it also has a unique history of ancient settlements. It is the place you can’t miss when visiting Nicaragua. As Ometepe is so diverse and perfect for any type of adventure, you can take your time to explore this wondrous piece of land by Nicaragua’s lake at your own pace. Some optional activities could include climbing the Maderas or Concepción volcano, visiting Santo Domingo beach, watching the dramatic sunset at Punta Jesus María, swimming in El Ojo de Agua or just enjoying the gorgeous view from the pool of your hotel.
Day 12 – Corn Island (B)
A transfer will take you directly to take the ferry back to San Jorge. Once on the other side, another transfer awaits to take you to the airport. At the airport of Corn Island, a taxi will be waiting for you. After arriving, you’ll have a free afternoon in Corn Island to explore or relax.
Day 13 & 14 The white pearl of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Sea (B)
White sand between your toes, snorkeling near coral reefs, diving in the sea looking for marine wildlife, authentic culture, historical places, paddle boarding on pristine waters and legendary hospitality are some of the reasons why Corn Island is considered a piece of paradise in the Caribbean. You have four beautiful days to explore these two islands and beyond.
Day 15 – Corn Island to Managua (B)
This is your last day in this paradise, get ready to return to Managua to prepare yourself and rest a little bit before going back home.
Day 16 – Departure from Nicaragua / Return home (B)
It’s time to go back home, and pack you holiday memories of the biggest country of Central America along with your bags. We hope this is not the last time you visit Nicaragua. Depending on your flight schedule, today you will be transferred to the Managua airport.
