Cities with culture in Sri Lanka
Anyone who loves culture will love this country where churches, mosques, Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas lie side by side. Two highlights are the old city of Anuradhapura and Kandy. Anuradhapura is an open-air museum full of palaces, temples and immense stupas. For Buddhists, this is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred sites, and annually thousands of pilgrims visit Anuradhapura.
Inland lies Kandy, also known as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is located on the shores of the beautiful Kandy Lake. Kandy is especially famous for the Temple of the Tooth. A tooth of the Buddha himself is kept inside the temple here. Every day, several poojas takes place where you can witness a spectacle of ceremonial dance and music.
The rich nature of Sri Lanka
Although Sri Lanka is relatively small, the nature is very diverse. The highlight is the interior is Hill Country. Here you find yourself surrounded by the intensely green mountains, dotted with tea plantations. This area is ideal for taking a multi-day car or scooter ride amongst the plantations, waterfalls and wonderful viewpoints. Another highlight of Sri Lanka is the wildlife parks. The country is one of the best destinations in Asia to spot elephants in the wild. If you’re in luck, you may also spot leopards, bears and buffaloes.
Some of the most beautiful train journeys in the world
For train lovers Sri Lanka is the place to be. Hop aboard and ride through the jungle on one of the most scenic train routes in the world. The trip starts in the capital Colombo, and goes via Kandy to the heart of the tea region in Nanuoya and on to the stunningly located Ella. On the way you will enjoy spectacular views of the green hills, tea plantations, waterfalls and friendly waving locals.
Beaches from paradise
Does your ideal trip end with a few days on the beach? Sri Lanka is an island blessed with spectacular beaches. The east coast is developing into a luxury destination with vast beaches and beautiful resorts.
