René & Anja Veldhuizen
We can’t wait to go back to Sri Lanka!
Two years ago, René and Anja Veldhuizen fell in love with Sri Lanka. Last year they decided to visit the island again. This time they didn’t book a group tour, but created an individual, tailor-made trip, together with our local travel expert. “Our stay in an ecolodge was one of the highlights,” say René and Anja.

René and Anja had travelled a lot already, but almost always with groups. “I had the feeling that group tours didn’t fit us anymore,” says Anja. “We wanted to do our own thing a bit more. René also preferred an individual trip, so we went in search of a perfect destination. As we really enjoyed Sri Lanka before, we decided to go back.”
“We booked our airline tickets, but we did not want to organize all the accommodation and transport ourselves,” says René. “We found Better Places online, and it was exactly what we were looking for. We could design our own trip and we were assured that everything was well-organized, with payment securities in place.”
René and Anja started their trip relaxing at Negombo Beach. After that, their driver Roshen drove them to Wilpattu National Park. “The communication with Roshen was excellent,” says Anja. “He had a lot of humor and he took great care of us. It’s important that you get along well and we really did.” At Wilpattu National Park, they slept in a luxury tent. “The tent had a separate bed and bathroom and was located in the middle of the jungle, separate from other tents,” Anja tells enthusiastically. “That really was a highlight of the trip. Later we also slept in a tent in Udawalawe National Park, but that was a more basic campsite. The Wilpattu was really special.”
Spend the night in an ecolodge
René and Anja also visited the ancient city of Anuradhapura and cycled along the ruins of King Polonnaruwa. They spent six nights in the Polwaththa Eco Lodge. “That was beautiful,” says Anja. “The lodge is run in a sustainable way; the hot water is heated by a solar water heater and there is limited electricity. But the lodge is beautifully located in the middle of the jungle. We made beautiful walks and the atmosphere was very romantic.” They also walked in the mountains around Ella where they climbed Little Adam’s Peak. They ended their Sri Lanka tour on the coast, where they stayed in Unawatuna and Galle, in beautiful, small-scale hotels.
Sri Lanka Experience – Varied Nature
The trip had countless highlights, but the stay in the luxury tent in Wilpattu National Park was a favorite. The luxury Thambapanni Retreat in Unawatuna and cycling along the temples of Polonnaruwa were also highlights. “Sri Lanka is a great country to travel,” says René. “The landscapes are very diverse, from mountains and tea plantations to jungle and beaches, all relatively close to each other. The people are also very warm and welcoming. For example, we had a day trip with a tuk-tuk driver through the tea plantations and he took us straight to his hospitable family. We are definitely going back to Sri Lanka (for a third time!), there are so many more places we want to discover.”
