How It All Started
We’re Saskia Griep and Freek ten Broeke, the founders of Better Places Travel. With a big dream and a pioneering heart, we began our mission to positively impact the world through travel. For years we worked in the tourism industry and travelled the globe, coming to the conclusion that:
Travel can make the world more beautiful,
for travellers and for the local population.
We want tourism to mean something, for you and for the local people. For you, because your journey is an unforgettable experience, and for the local people, because your visit offers them a direct source of income. We want to boost the positive impact of tourism; ensuring that better places to travel remain good places to live.
That is responsible travel. And that is our passion.
How We Grew
In 2014, we first began operating on the Dutch market as Better Places, after which we expanded to the German market under the name Fairaway in 2016, and now since 2017 are internationally known as Better Places Travel. We are a fast-growing travel platform that offers high-quality travel experiences with a focus on nature and the local population. Travellers design their own tailor-made trip together with a travel expert, who has been living in the destination for years.
Our motto is Better Places to live in, Better Places to visit. In that order. We strongly believe that travel, when done responsibly, can make a positive difference to locals and the destination, and provide for a more authentic experience for the traveller.
By offering local excursions within communities, we not only aim to bring money directly to local, small operators at the destination, but also want to encourage and help sustain their cultural heritage and local traditions. We have developed several ‘off the beaten track’ experiences, giving travellers the chance to experience another side of a popular destination, while offering a great source of income to local operators.
We also aim to address the negative environmental impact of tourism through our partnerships in carbon offsetting and minimization of plastic waste. We do this by compensating the CO2 emissions of all its journeys – including international flights – through investing in a Gold Standard project, and partnering with local initiatives that are reducing single-use plastic waste. It is our aim to go completely single-use plastic bottle free on all of our trips by the end of 2019.
A New Concept: Impact Travel
Better Places Travel is a social enterprise and certified B Corp. This means that we are committed to making a social impact above making a profit. As a social enterprise we find it important that the people in the countries we work with fully profit from tourism. This means, for example, that the people we work with receive a fair wage and have decent working hours and conditions. For you as traveller it means you’ll often stay in small-scale, locally owned hotels and accommodations and take part in local excursions that offer you a truly authentic experience. We also invest a portion of our profits in various social and environmental projects.
The usual is exceptional
We want you—the traveller—to get to know your destination of choice. To come in contact with locals and really experience daily life in a place.
For what is commonplace in one country, is often extraordinary to us.
That’s why we put you directly in contact with a selected local expert, and together you design your ideal travel experience.
Local travel professionals can find it difficult to compete with major tour operators, even though the type of travel they offer meets a demand for local, authentic travel experiences. We want to give these local professionals a chance to grow, to share their knowledge and to ensure that you—the enthusiastic traveller—gain new & extraordinary travel experiences.
Aside from a focus on local, we also ensure that all our partners work as sustainably as possible. We are determined to make a difference and get closer to a 100 % sustainable travel industry.
Better Places Travel consciously focuses on individual, unique, tailor-made travel experiences. We believe individual travel is ideally suited to bring you—the traveller—directly in contact with the local population. You can spend the night in small-scale family hotels, lodges, or even in people’s homes (homestays). Individual travel means there is plenty of room for personal attention, and we can focus on making your travel experience truly extraordinary.
